Oil Spill

I think what is happening in the Gulf of Mexico is absolutely terrible. Corporations don't seem to think about the environment when they're trying to make money. This is something that is going to be affecting us for years down the road. Animals are going to be affected. The wildlife, the agriculture, the lifestyles of people living in the Louisiana, will all be affected. It's quite a tragedy that the environment seems to be so unimportant to big corporations.

Boycotting BP sounds like a good idea, but unless a large amount of people do it, the affect won't be noticed by the company. If a large group of people can agree to boycott the company, it might make them see how harmful what they've done is. Unfortunately, I don't think enough people will participate in a boycott. Punishments should be dealt out, but it seems the environment is losing its importance every day.

  1. What makes my stomach turn is a company like Dutch Shell that takes advantage of its competitor’s shortcomings to publicly proclaim to be a “green” and ecologically responsible company. It is all poppycock.

Boycotts do not work because the petroleum products that we could purchase form BP here in Michigan may not actually be oil sequestered by British Petroleum. Oil sales operate in a “pool system”, and no pun intended. In short, this means that the gasoline you purchased from a Shell or Mobile station might actually be derived from BP crude. For this reason, a boycott is ineffective. In addition, what you mentioned is also right on the mark. BP is the fourth largest company in the world. Pathetic boycotts do little against a company with sales figures that rival the world average for a nation’s entire annual GDP.

    Au revoir,

    Michael

  2. I dont know if boycotting them is going to be the best idea. If anything we should be giving them more money to help fix the problem. I have a feeling that money is holding back certain options of cleaning up the culf.
